Definition
Root canal treatment (RCT) is an endodontic procedure in which diseased or necrotic pulp tissue is removed, the root-canal system is cleaned and shaped, disinfected, and subsequently obturated to prevent reinfection and preserve the natural tooth.
Causes / Indications
RCT is commonly indicated in:
- Pulpal infection due to deep dental caries
- Pulp necrosis
- Irreversible pulpitis
- Periapical inflammation associated with pulpal infection
- Traumatic injury to the tooth
- Cracked or fractured tooth involving the pulp
- Repeated restorative procedures causing pulpal damage
- Certain cases requiring endodontic treatment before definitive restoration
