What is a root canal

Definition

Root canal treatment (RCT) is an endodontic procedure in which diseased or necrotic pulp tissue is removed, the root-canal system is cleaned and shaped, disinfected, and subsequently obturated to prevent reinfection and preserve the natural tooth.

Causes / Indications

RCT is commonly indicated in:

  1. Pulpal infection due to deep dental caries
  2. Pulp necrosis
  3. Irreversible pulpitis
  4. Periapical inflammation associated with pulpal infection
  5. Traumatic injury to the tooth
  6. Cracked or fractured tooth involving the pulp
  7. Repeated restorative procedures causing pulpal damage
  8. Certain cases requiring endodontic treatment before definitive restoration
